Enhanced security

Founded in 2017 by former Formula One and McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray, the company engineers and designs cars without compromise to provide unrivalled driving experiences and driver-centric connection.

Working together since 2022, Apogee has become a primary partner for all of Gordon Murray’s IT assets. This includes laptops for 350 employees under a flexible leasing arrangement, which incorporates the design, build and deployment of Windows Autopilot. Apogee’s ongoing services and solutions deliver streamlined device management, enhanced security and automated processes, significantly boosting IT efficiency and productivity across the board.

The Background

Before partnering with Apogee, Gordon Murray faced several challenges in managing their IT estate, consuming critical resources and hindering productivity across its employee base. The company was:

  • Spending excessive time readying new laptops for use by staff members. Unboxing devices, updating Windows, domain connection, and application installation typically took 2.5 hours, which was placing significant strain on the small IT team in the business.
  • Unable to access ongoing account support when experiencing an issue with a device.
  • Tied to purchasing rapidly aging assets through a large, one-off CAPEX (capital expenditure) payment, instead of a flexible and cost-effective OPEX (operating expenditure) agreement.
  • Struggling with a lack of standardisation when it came to device rollout, with significant variations in makes and models among its user base.

“Being a young, niche manufacturer, agility is absolutely key for us. But the IT function was struggling to meet the demands of the wider organisation when we brought new users on board or needed to replace devices for existing employees, leading to problems managing the overall estate. This issue was stifling productivity and growth, so we needed support from a supplier that could help us overcome the challenges,” says Wayne Clements, Head of IT, Gordon Murray Group.

The Solution

After discussing the challenges being encountered, Apogee promptly carried out a thorough audit of Gordon Murray’s existing IT infrastructure. The process of fully understanding the company’s specific environment involved an in-depth analysis of the organisation’s network, focusing on end users and devices. Following a comprehensive consultation and armed with the necessary data, Apogee was able to develop a tailored solution that addressed the automotive manufacturer’s exact needs.

Apogee, together with Argon, a subsidiary of Apogee Corporation, set about deploying HP devices to all end users under a flexible OPEX agreement, which incorporated the design, build and deployment of Windows Autopilot on each laptop. The Autopilot solution works by automatically applying a base image as soon as the device connects to the internal network. The user is then able to log in using their domain credentials, which triggers the automatic configuration according to the user’s individual specifications.

Apogee also:

  • Took steps to package critical applications and distribute them via the Company Portal. Users could then install company-approved applications without having to contact the IT team for help.
  • Streamlined 60-70 different device models in circulation down to two, after the audit process brought to light the number of different device models that were being used by Gordon Murray staff. Now, all CAD users use one device, whilst standard users use another.
  • Consulted with the organisation about their security posture and where improvements could be made. Microsoft Intune, a cloud-based endpoint management solution, was then introduced to adhere to CIS (Center for Internet Security) Benchmarks and enhance Gordon Murray’s cyber security defences.
  • Migrated group policy configurations from on-premises Active Directory to Intune for an even more modern device management experience.
  • Prior to deployment, worked with Gordon Murray’s IT team to ensure a step-by-step change management procedure was in place and was correctly piloted before implementation.

“Once we completed the audit of Gordon Murray’s IT estate, our priority was to ease the strain on the IT department with streamlined laptop deployment and management, but equally important was ensuring that the new devices we deployed were secure from cyber threats. With Microsoft Intune, every laptop is aligned with CIS policies, ensuring that sensitive data and designs are safeguarded and protected,” says Max Robson, Account Director, Apogee Corporation.

The Outcome

Apogee is now the central partner for all end user assets, with Gordon Murray making the full transition to HP devices. The company benefits from significant time savings when it comes to rollout of laptops to staff and supporting software. It now takes less than five minutes to fully prep a device, so staff can complete their tasks much quicker. With this level of automation introduced, Gordon Murray’s IT team now has the time to focus more on higher value projects, including technical work, as well as end user incidents and requests.

If there is a device management concern or issue that needs to be addressed, Gordon Murray has access to next-day on-site support from Apogee’s team.

“Having one of my team spend an entire day imaging laptops is now a thing of the past and the support from Apogee has been outstanding, with their communication exemplary.

I truly can’t fault them in any way. Whether it’s during the testing or the deployment process, they are highly responsive whenever we have questions or need assistance.”

The Future

With the relationship flourishing, Apogee is now working with Gordon Murray to create backups of around 2,000 hand drawn car designs. A digital index will be made available of all the drawings, with an option to retrieve any file from the cloud. Additionally, every new starter is now being presented with a co-branded welcome box, which contains their ready-to-go laptop, to enhance the first-day experience.

“It’s often that the level of executive and account management support provided by a supplier drops off as the transition from an early customer into a regular working relationship takes place. But if anything, it’s been growing with Apogee. The support we’ve received from our account manager has been fantastic. The relationship has grown from printing into a full stack technology partnership, and we’ve always found the team to be dependable, knowledgeable and fully trusted.

“With Apogee as one of our key strategic IT suppliers, our colleagues are benefiting from updated hardware, consistent secure builds and rapid deployment, and our customers are benefiting from having a supplier with the weight of Apogee and HP behind them,” adds Clements.
